Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects approximately 1 in 88 people. Autistic people share common differences in their social communication and interaction alongside repetitive or restricted behaviour patterns, special interests, and often sensory sensitivities. Autism is a spectrum condition, which means that people are impacted in very different ways, with different strengths and difficulties. Some Autistic people will need intensive lifelong support from others, others live independent lives with strategies to manage the differences they have.
Autistic people in the Borders are supported by a wide range of health, social care, education and third sector organisations. This Autism Point aims to gather together useful information and advice for Autistic people, their parents and carers, and the professionals who support them.
