Speech and Language Therapy pre-registration degree programmes are delivered across the UK at undergraduate and postgraduate diploma/masters levels, with programmes combining both practical and academic study.

All programmes will leave you eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).  You will require to be registered with both professional bodies to be able to work and practice as a Speech and Language Therapist in the UK.

Academic course components include:

  • Theories relating to the social and clinical context of human communication and dysphagia
  • Core values and principles of Speech and Language Therapy
  • Professional Practice, attitudes, and behaviours
  • Critical thinking and reasoning skills, including research skills
  • Skills in the analysis of speech and communication difficulties (linguistics, phonetics and phonology, fluency, specific comunication needs, anatomy and physiology,psychology) and dysphagia
  • Leadership skills

Placements

Students gain experience in Speech and Language Therapy services.  Placements vary in length and cover a range of different practice areas.

Theoretical knowledge is developed, integrated, and applied through regular practice placements.

NHS Borders

In NHS Borders, we are committed, through our Practice Placement Agreement (PPA) to offer a specific number of student placements throughout each academic year.

All students are expected to comply with the HCPC "Standards of Conduct, Performance & Ethics" (2016) and The Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists guidance in CQ Live, in relation to the 10 key areas of professional practice :

All students will have already been advised from University which speciality they have been assigned to for their forthcoming placement.
