Children and Young People's Physiotherapy
The Children and Young People's (Paediatric) Physiotherapy Team is community-based and provides a Borders-wide service. Each Physiotherapist covers a geographical location and they provide input to the acute hospital setting (Ward 15, BGH) as required. The Paediatric Physios provide a service to children with a diverse range of difficulties, with an age range of 0-19 years while still in school.
What does a Physiotherapist do?
Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that promotes the health and wellbeing of all. Children's Physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people.
Children's Physiotherapy covers a wide range of clinical practice and conditions - some are similar to those seen in adults and some are specific to children:
- Neuromuscular disorders, e.g. Muscular Dystrophy
- Musculoskeletal pain, e.g. acute injuries, fractures, joint pains
- Neurological conditions, e.g. Cerebral Palsy, head injury
- Respiratory conditions, e.g. Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis
- Rheumatological conditions, e.g. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
- Congenital disorders, e.g. Spina Bifida, limb deficiencies
- Orthopaedic conditions, e.g. Talipes, Torticollis, Plagiocephaly
- Congenital syndromes and metabolic diseases
- Neonatal care
- Developmental delay
- Co-ordination difficulties
- Conditions where mobility is affected, e.g. Oncology
A request for assistance from the Children and Young People's Physiotherapy Service can be made via the child's school, Healthcare Professional, Doctor, Health Visitor, Nurse, or by parents/carers contacting the service directly.
