Equipment
The Borders Ability Equipment Service provides a range of equipment to people across the Borders aiming to maximise independence and mobility.
The service is for anyone of any age whose independence and mobility is limited because of a physical disability, frailty or ill health.
Short-term wheelchair loan service
The Community Equipment Service will now be providing a short-term wheelchair hire service (up to 12 weeks with a maximum period of six months) for those who meet the following criteria:
- Support for a person who is end-of-life
- To facilitate hospital discharge
- To prevent hospital admission
- Support with recovery from surgery or provide support to those temporarily non-weight bearing following illness
- Support for those waiting for a permanent wheelchair provision from wheelchair services.
This replaces the service previously provided by the British Red Cross.
Referrals
The equipment service are not a direct access service and are not currently set-up to take referrals or visits from the public.
If think you may benefit from an assessment for provision of equipment and are currenlty receiving treatment, you should speak to your Health Care Professional. Alternatively, you can call 0300 100 1800 (opt 1) for the Social Work Duty Hub to request an assessment. or arrange a collection.
Returns
If you have equipment which you wish to return to the store following a hospital admission, death or change of use, you can also contact the Social Work Duty Hub on 0300 100 1800 (opt 1) to arrange a collection.
Please do not return items to NHS sites, as they do not have the capacity to store or return these items.
