We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Golden Hip Award by the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit Group for the best performing Health Board in Scotland for patients with hip fractures.
The Golden Hip is a coveted and internationally recognised award which started in Scotland in 2016. The award is presented to the team that meets the highest overall performance measured against the 12 national standards of care for hip fracture patients over the year.
This is the first time that NHS Borders has won this award and it demonstrates the excellent multi disciplinary teamwork and collaboration that has gone in to achieving such high standards of patient care; running right through the patient journey from attendance at the Emergency Department to care on the ward, surgery, rehabilitation and discharge planning.
Introducing Karen Adam, Trauma and Orthopaedic Manager from the national Centre for Sustainable Delivery who handed over the award, Dr Jonathan Antrobus, Quality Improvement Clinical Lead at NHS Borders admitted that he has wanted to win the award since it was introduced in 2016!
Commenting Dr Antrobus said: “what makes this award so special is that it is not won by an individual; it reflects teamwork, great communication & collaboration and ultimately really good, person centred care and positive patient outcomes which is what we strive for.”
Adding his thoughts, Mr Graham Dahl, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon said: “Hip fracture is the most common serious orthopaedic injury to affect the elderly, with more than 6,000 patients admitted to hospital every year in Scotland alone. This figure is predicted to increase by 30% over the next five years as a consequence of population demographic changes, so it essential that we manage this injury as effectively and efficiently as possible to provide the best outcomes for our patients and make the best use of our resources.
“I am exceptionally proud of our multi-disciplinary team in achieving such great performance, and we will display our Golden Hip with great pride.”
