This month you may notice areas of longer grass around NHS Borders sites as we take part in the ‘No Mow May’ initiative which promotes biodiversity through allowing grassy areas to grow wild during May.

By allowing grass and wildflowers to grow freely across many of our grassy areas, we will help to provide a feast for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, tackle pollution, reduce urban heat extremes and lock away atmospheric carbon below ground.

Harriet Campbell, Non-Executive Director at NHS Borders, who is our Climate & Sustainability Champion said: “The triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution affects everyone. It impacts those who work directly with, or rely upon, the services of NHS Borders as well as the wider population of the Scottish Borders, Scotland and the world.

“We are proud, as part of our ongoing Climate & Sustainability commitment, to be supporting ‘No Mow May’ and helping to mitigate the impact of climate change in the Borders. The straightforward act of not mowing grass brings other welcome benefits such as saving time and money too.

“Consider what you could do in the half an hour you’d usually spend mowing your lawn. Why not use this extra time to enjoy the outdoors in different ways such as going for a walk or cycle and taking in the beautiful Borders scenery? This will not only boost your physical health but help to improve your mental wellbeing too.”
