Change to Travel Vaccination Delivery

From now, travel vaccinations will be administered by a Community Pharmacy on behalf of NHS Borders.

General Manager for Primary & Community Services, Cathy Wilson, said: “We are pleased to be working with Lindsay & Gilmour in Hawick to begin rolling out travel vaccinations, and look forward to other Community Pharmacies expanding this service across more localities in the Borders next year.

“Getting risk assessed and vaccinated before travelling is one of the best ways a traveller can protect their health. If you are planning to go abroad it is important to start seeking advice on vaccination at least 8-12 weeks before you are due to travel. This helps to ensure that your body has enough time to fully benefit from any necessary vaccinations.”

Visiting another country, even if it’s just for a holiday, can put you at risk from diseases which may not normally be found in the UK.

While most people travelling from the UK tend to visit places that are considered low risk, this is not always the case. If you are travelling to destinations which are considered higher risk, you may need specific advice, vaccinations or preventative medication (e.g. antimalarial pills) to help protect you.

Please check NHS Fit for Travel website to see if there are any vaccinations required for your chosen destination.

These vaccinations are provided by the NHS at no cost to our patients:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Typhoid
  • Cholera
  • Polio

You may have to pay for other vaccinations, this is at the discretion of the pharmacy providing the service.
