Alcohol and mental health are closely linked. Drinking too much can affect your wellbeing. Some  people may drink to relieve the symptoms of mental ill health or cope with difficult feelings.

If you experience anxiety, alcohol can you give you a short lived feeling of relaxation, but this quickly disappears and may make things worse or create other problems.

The immediate effects of cutting down include:

  • Feeling better in the mornings
  • Being less tired during the day
  • Better looking skin
  • Feeling more energetic
  • Better weight management

‘Be aware of using drugs and / or alcohol to cope with difficult feelings’ is one of the Mental Health Foundation’s best mental health tips backed by research.

Drug use can also have an impact on your mental health. If you are concerned about your own or someone else's drug use, please use the support information below.
